How often should I change or clean my filters?
How often you change your filter depends on the type of filter you have and the elements in your house. If you have a standard fiberglass filter, recommended replacement is every month. Pleated, more efficient filters can last up to 3 months. Spacegard media and Honeywell media filters can last up to 12 months. Always check your filter regularly to insure it does not plug up, restricting air flow to your furnace, which could cause your furnace to fail. If your filter is not disposable, follow the manufacturer instructions for cleaning.
Should I cover my outdoor unit in the winter?
Covering the unit is not necessary. Covering an air conditioner could hold in moisture, causing problems in the spring when you want to start it up. If you are wanting to keep leaves and sticks out, simply cover the top 10 inches only. Air conditioners are designed to withstand all possible climate changes. Heat pumps should never be covered since they run all year long. Trane does make covers designed to allow efficient air flow.
Is there any advantage to setting my thermostat fan to “ON” so the fan runs constantly?
There are a couple advantages to running the fan constantly. One is that the air is constantly filtering in your home. This is most beneficial with a Trane CleanEffects. The other is that because the air is moving, you have more even temperature throughout your home.
What does the fire/snowflake symbol on the thermostat mean?
When the thermostat is set to heat, the fire symbol may show on your thermostat. That symbol simply means your thermostat is set to heat. The snowflake symbol means the thermostat is set to cool.
How often should I have my furnace and air conditioner maintenanced?
Frequency of maintenance is determined by the age of your equipment. Units under 5 years should be checked every other year, while units older than 5 we would recommend once a year. Tica offers a maintenance contract to help ensure you are ready for the upcoming season.
